ORIGINS
The Thembu family settled in what is now the Eastern Cape. The Thembu emerged under a single united banner, with smaller clans owing allegiance to the Thembu Royal family.
Prior to British invasion and occupation of the then Cape, the Thembu was an independent kingdom. After occupation, the Thembu were forced to live under British government rule as part of The Cape Colony. The area became a Bantustan and stretched from the Transkei to the Ciskei and became the home of The Xhosa. During Apartheid, Ciskei and Transkei were given independent homeland status, albeit with no international recognition. These independent homelands were considered Xhosa homelands.
