DIAMOND MINING IN SOUTH AFRICA

A BRIEF HISTORY

HISTORY

From Cecil John Rhodes to Barney Barnato, the diamond mining industry in South Africa proved to be a significant wealth generator for European speculators and

entrepreneurs. Since the Diamond Rush of the late 1800s, South Africa’s diamond

mining industry has proven to be considerable. It is said that in the 1870's,

South Africa yielded more diamonds than India had in the previous 2000 years.

Founded: 1867

EXCLUSIVE

One underlying truth is that despite the industrial success and the rags to riches

stories of the diamond mines of South Africa, Black South Africans were excluded from the success of the industry. That’s not to say that black South Africans were not a part of the industry. Through exploitative laws and colonial and later Apartheid government relationships, the mining industry was able to thrive, at the exclusion of the hands that mined the stones.

PROHIBITIVE

Diamond mining in South Africa is regulated to the point where it is prohibitively expensive and cumbersome to begin operating in the sector. This means that without

intervention, the status quo will remain and change, which in this case this case refers to inclusivity, will be very slow to take effect.

The vision of Mandela Royal Diamond is to open avenues into the industry, not just for investors but for black South African traders, mines, diamond cutters and diamond polishers.

The diamond industry has the potential to improve the financial and economic wellbeing of the majority of South Africans through direct and indirect jobs associated with the diamond mining sector.
